2/5/2020 0 Comments Understanding Airfoil DesignAn airfoil can generally be described as a special structure on an airplane that is made in such a way that it reacts in a particular manner when it moves through air. One of the properties of air that is different from the other states of matter is that it behaves in a distinct manner if different amounts of pressures are introduced to the air. Additionally, air will also react in various ways when it is made to encounter different velocities. The main purpose of an airfoil on an aircraft is to provide the right amount of lift that is needed by the pilot. Discover more on airfoil on this website.
A lot of people generally wonder how an aircraft is able to go up so easily yet it might weigh several tonnes but the secret to that usually lies in the way the airfoils are designed and how they operate. Airfoils are usually found on the wings of any airplane and they are designed differently according to several factors such as the type of aircraft and its total weight. There is a part of the airfoil that is usually referred to as the leading edge and this part generally appears to be in a roundish shape. The other part of the airfoil usually appears to be quite thin and has a slant which makes it tapered. This part is usually known as the trailing side. When making an airfoil, different laws of physics have to be put into consideration and this is why airplanes are easily maneuvered in the air. Additionally, the airfoil is able to create two types of pressures over and under the airplane wings. One of those pressures is the negative pressure which is created over the wing while a positive pressure is generated on the lower side of the wing. This difference in pressure is what leads to the lifting of the airplane. When the aircraft needs to come down, the opposite occurs such that the negative pressure is created on the bottom part of the wing while the positive pressure is formed on the upper part of the wing. When an aircraft is not in flight, some regular maintenance has to be carried out and one of the most important parts that is checked is the airfoil. If one or both of the airfoils happen to be in bad shape, then they will have to be replaced with new ones since it is quite dangerous to fly an aircraft with faulty airfoils.
